Best Things to Do in Gazi: Athens’ Coolest Neighborhood

gazi If you’re planning your first trip to Athens and want to experience more than just the Acropolis and Plaka, Gazi is the neighborhood you shouldn’t miss. Gazi is where the old industrial heart of the city has transformed into a vibrant hub of nightlife, street art, and some of the best food in town. Think of it as Athens’ answer to Berlin’s Kreuzberg or London’s Shoreditch, an area with grit, creativity, and plenty of character. Let’s dive into all the ways you can spend a perfect day (and night) exploring Gazi.

What’s Gazi All About?

Gazi takes its name from the old gasworks (the “Gazi” factory) built in the 19th century to power Athens. Today, that very same complex has been reborn as Technopolis, a cultural space that hosts concerts, exhibitions, festivals, and open-air cinema nights. All around Technopolis, abandoned warehouses and factories have been converted into bars, galleries, and clubs. The neighborhood still feels industrial but with a creative, bohemian twist. Gazi is especially famous for its nightlife. But don’t wait until dark—there’s a lot to see and do during the day, too.

What to See and Do in Gazi

1. Explore Technopolis

Start your day wandering around Technopolis City of Athens. You’ll spot the red-brick chimneys and huge iron machinery—now part of an urban cultural landmark. The main square often hosts food markets, craft fairs, and live performances. There’s also a small café where you can grab a freddo espresso and watch people setting up exhibitions. Tip: If you’re traveling with kids or just curious, visit the Industrial Gas Museum, which explains how gas was produced and distributed to the city. It’s more interesting than it sounds, I promise!

2. Take a Street Art Walk

Gazi is an open-air gallery. Every corner is covered with colorful murals, graffiti tags, and political stencils. Wander around Persefonis Street and Voutadon Street, and look out for large-scale pieces by INO, known for his black-and-white surrealist figures, and Sonke, whose little blue owls pop up everywhere in Athens.

3. Browse the Art Galleries

If you’re into contemporary art, stop by The Breeder Gallery (45 Iasonos Street). This converted ice cream factory showcases edgy, conceptual exhibitions by both Greek and international artists. The space itself is striking, minimalist concrete interiors in stark contrast to the old exterior. Another good stop is AD Gallery, which focuses on avant-garde art and experimental installations. They often host artist talks and openings, so check their websites to see what’s on.

4. Discover Kerameikos

Just across the street is Kerameikos, the ancient cemetery of Athens. It’s a peaceful, lesser-visited archaeological site where you can walk among weathered tombstones, parts of the old city walls, and remains of the Sacred Way. The Kerameikos Museum is small but well-curated, with pottery and funerary sculptures that bring ancient Athens to life. If you’re interested in history, this site feels like a hidden gem.

5. Chill in Avdi Square

When you need a break from exploring, head to Avdi Square in neighboring Metaxourgeio (a 5-minute walk). Locals love this leafy plaza, which is surrounded by low-key cafés and small galleries. Grab a coffee at Micraasia or a cocktail at Blue Parrot, a colorful café-bar with great atmosphere, especially in the evening.
