Top 5 summer destinations close to Athens – Mykonos
It’s nearly impossible to find someone who hasn’t heard of Mykonos, Greece’s most cosmopolitan destination. With its luxurious resorts, beautiful beaches and renowned party life, Mykonos is the meeting point of thousands of people and a beloved getaway for many celebrities every summer.
From May to late October, the island is packed with travellers who arrive there on cruise ships or with their private jets and there is an ongoing summer party in every corner of the white and blue buildings.
Mykonos is the perfect place to make all your summer dreams come true but it comes with a price. The prices are among the highest in Greece and if you are travelling on a budget, this destination should not be on the top of your list. Mykonos is all about the glitz and glamour, about award winning suite and boutique hotels and restaurants and high quality clubs and organised beaches that promise a grand time to anyone who wishes to visit.
The easiest way to get to Mykonos is with a ferry from Athens or surrounding islands and by plane since there is a small international airport with many direct flights to different European cities.

The island is relatively small and you can get anywhere on foot but if you wish to explore a little further than the main town, we suggest you hire a scooter or a car from one of the many rental offices located on the island. There is also cheap public transport that connects most of the areas and makes getting around easy and affordable.
For short stays, it is better to book a hotel in the main town of Mykonos with easy access to all the main attractions, whereas for longer stays one can choose between a variety of accommodations in one of the beach towns and villages on the island like Ornos.
Mykonos has to offer a variety of culinary options too, from family and local tavernas by the beach or fancy sushi bars and Michelin star restaurants. The nightlife scene is strong with some of the most popular clubs and beach bars located in the most beautiful spots that offer unforgettable parties and events until the early hours of the morning.

There are many local attractions and things to see in Mykonos and one should definitely visit Mykonos town with the picturesque alleys and local shops that have appeared in countless movies, music videos and blogs. The Myconian ‘chora’ is a typical Cycladic village with narrow stone streets and churches that create an idyllic atmosphere. It’s not accidental that many couples choose to get married on the island or visit for their honeymoon.
Another visit-worthy place in Mykonos is definitely Little Venice from where one can marvel at the beautiful panoramic view of the Greek sunset. To complete your stay in Mykonos you have to visit the Windmills, one of the most famous landmarks of the island. For the perfect photos we suggest visiting early in the morning or by dawn where the sky colours and the lights from the horizon create the perfect studio for marvellous photos.

Mykonos is a windy island but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t get hot!
Summer in Greece means high temperatures and the best way to cool down and relax during your vacation, especially if you are in Mykonos, is to visit one of its many beaches.
The Myconian coastline accommodates some of the countries’ best beaches that have been awarded with a blue flag and will definitely make you feel like you’re in paradise.
But remember, a visit to the beach can make your wallet explode so be prepared to spend comfortably if you are visiting during summer months!
Top 5 summer destinations close to Athens – Santorini
The romantic island of Santorini is definitely one of the ‘postcard’ models when it comes to Greek islands. With whitewashed houses and blue domed churches all carved on the side of a hill, with sandy beaches and lovely pathways, Santorini is an idyllic place, especially popular among honeymooners and couples.

In contrast to Mykonos, the vibe here is more peaceful and romantic, unless you decide to spend the evening in Oia, the beautiful side-of-the-cliff area from where you can catch one of the most beautiful sunsets in the entire region. Santorini is renowned for its sunset views, therefore during that time of the day and because the streets are narrow and the area is dense and narrow, it can get pretty crowded so be prepared! If you don’t mind a big crowd however, we strongly recommend you experience this majestic sight if you find yourself in Santorini.
The island belongs to the Cycladic group and it’s easily accessible by plane or ferry from Athens or neighbouring islands. Once there, the easiest way to move around is definitely on foot but of course, if you wish to explore further it’s perfectly fine to use a scooter or even a rental car.
The most popular places among travellers are definitely Fira, the capital of the island, Oia, the sunset spot and of course Imerovigli , the stunning quiet side of the island.

The heart of the island beats in cosmopolitan Fira, with a buzzing nightlife and lots of shops, restaurants and cafes. If you are spending one day on the island or simply wish to party, this is the right place for you.
In Oia, as mentioned above, you will be able to chase one of the most beautiful sunsets you will ever see. This is where you will be able to find some of the most stunning cave-like hotels with suites and private pools overlooking the breathtaking caldera. This of course comes with the extra something so if you are travelling on a budget this area would probably not be your top choice when it comes to accommodation.
Now if you simply wish to lay back and relax, away from the crowds and party people, then Imerovigli is the place for you. It’s not too far from the centre of the island but far enough to give you a relaxing and chill time. Skaros Rock, the landmark of this area is definitely worth visiting especially if you are into hiking. Alternatively you can sit back and enjoy the view and a delicious greek coffee from the balcony of your hotel.
One thing most people don’t know about Santorini is its popular wine production. The island has some of the best vineyards and wineries in the country, exporting wine nationally. If you love wine then we would definitely recommend trying some local wines in one of the big wineries or from the table of your seaside restaurant. Just make sure to ask for the local production!

Santorini is a volcanic island, therefore you will not find the white, sandy beaches that exist in other parts of Greece. By all means, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit one, especially the spectacular Ammoudi Bay with the fresh sea-food!

The temple of Aphaia is definitely worth visiting as it is considered the best preserved temple of the Classical times in the entirety of Greece. Located on the top of the hill of the island, the temple as well as its archaeological museum of great historical significance will certainly satisfy those who are seeking more information about ancient history. The seaside town of Perdika and the village of Paleochora are two picturesque places worth visiting if you wish to enjoy tranquil moments and delicious food. The inhabited island of Moni is a spectacular place protected as a natural park of wildlife. There is a very small church on the top which is worth visiting in order to enjoy a great panoramic sea view.

If religious architecture and art are your thing you should know that Aigina has many beautiful Orthodox churches of great importance. Agios Nektarios is an old monastery close to the village of Paleochora mentioned above with beautiful surrounding gardens and architecture as it constitutes the biggest building on the island. On the contrary, the smallest church in the area, the Church of St Nicholas the Thalassinos is the first and last thing you see when you arrive or leave the island. It’s location is not by accident as St Nicholas is considered the protector of boats and fishermen in Greek orthodox history.

Santorini might be famous for its wine but Aigina has a unique and popular pistachio production that is world famous with many exports of the local product to the entire global. You will find local products with pistachio flavours all over the island and you would be surprised to find out that there is an annual Aigina Fistiki Festival (Fistiki = pistachio in greek) organised by the local authorities in order to promote the local production.
Top 5 summer destinations close to Athens – Sifnos
Sifnos is one of these islands that you wouldn’t normally know unless someone had told you about it or you saw it in a leaflet.
Credit: Love Exploring
Compared to Mykonos or Santorini, Sifnos is not the most popular Cycladic destination but its wild, almost untouched beauty and small tourist crowds make it a desirable destination for travellers who wish to relax away from the noise and the crowds.
Getting to the island is easier if you are already in Cyclades, as the ferry from Santorini takes you there in no time but it’s also possible to get the boat from Athens, which will take you around 6 hours.
Sifnos is a small island and mostly mountainous and you don’t need many days to explore it.
Its outstanding beauty, with the breathtaking scenery, small traditional houses and sandy beaches constitute for the perfect place to sit back and take a breath.

Sifnos has an excellent hiking route and an organised system on the island around hiking with clear paths and points for the hikers and it is highly recommended to follow a local guide for a hiking adventure since there are many tours provided.
Despite its small size, Sifnos accommodates..wait for it…235 churches! It sounds impossible but everywhere you turn there is a small whitewashed church for you to explore. The most picturesque church of them all is definitely the church of Seven Martyrs which is located on top of a hill and is literally surrounded by nothing but sea with a dramatically beautiful view.

Except for churches, Sifnos is packed with a variety of beaches for all tastes. The most popular beaches are located in Platis Gyalos, Faros and Chrissopigi.
In Platis Gyalos and Faros you will find lots of traditional tavernas where you will be able to enjoy Greek cuisine at its best. Chickpeas are the trademark of the island so don’t miss the delicious chickpea salad and croquettes. The crystal clear waters of these areas are inviting and alluring for those whose vacation equals relaxing at the beach all day.
Chrissopigi takes its name from the title monastery that adorns the area. The sandy beaches are lined with trees so there is plenty of shade to lie under when the temperatures get too hot.

Sifnos’ pottery history goes back to the ancient times and even nowadays there are several ceramic shops that produce high-quality pottery. If you stop by one of the 20 pottery shops scattered around the island make sure to literally grab a piece of land to remind you of your holidays!
Top 5 summer destinations close to Athens – Nafplio
Nafplio is the only place in this list that isn’t actually an island! Located in the Peloponnese, only 2 hours away from Athens, this beautiful seaside town of rich historical importance and unique places to see constitutes one of the best short-summer destinations especially for Athenians. Fun fact: Nafplio used to be the first capital of the modern Greek state before Athens took over.

Nafplio combines everything. The sea, history and beautiful urban environment. Its occupation by the Frankish and Venetian is seen today in the architecture and the imposing Palamidi Castle, one of the most beautiful and popular castles in the Greek region. Even though it was built in the 17th century, the castle-fortress remains in perfect condition today attracting many tourists who climb on top to marvel at the breathtaking panoramic view.
Another fortress worth visiting is the famous Bourtzi (Castello Dello Soglio) that seems like floating on the sea’s surface. The museum-turned-fortress can be reached by a picturesque boat ride and it’s definitely worth visiting if you are into mediaeval history and archaeology!

The historic city of Nafplion is perfectly explained and exhibited through the many museums available in the area such as the Archaeological Museum of Nafplio, the Komboloi Museum and the War Museum. A visit to these museums will definitely give you a perfect insight into the local history and culture.
As the old capital of Greece, Nafplio has a network of streets and shopping areas just like Athens does. The main street of Megalos Vasileios or else Megalos Dromos runs through the town and covers the main attractions and shopping districts of Nafplio. Here you will find brand shops as well as local products and souvenirs. The streets end at the main square of the area which has the same name as the main square in Athens , Syntagma Square! Just like its Athenian counterpart, the old Greek Parliament was located there. The building today serves as a museum and next to it, you can also find the Archaeological Museum of Nafplion mentioned above.

When talking about summer destinations we cannot omit the obvious…sunny beaches!
Nafplio might not be an island but its beaches have nothing to be envious of those of the more popular islands. After the cultural part of your vacation you will have the opportunity to relax by the sea and enjoy the summer breeze.
Arvanitia beach is the most popular organised beach and it has also been awarded with a blue flag. Here you can spend your whole day with your family or significant other since all the amenities are provided for the perfect chill day at the beach.
Another popular destination for beach lovers is Karathonas beach located about 3km from the centre. Equipped with many coffee shops, tavernas and water sports facilities this is another perfect getaway for everyone seeking some fun under the sun.

If you are spending a whole day in Nafplio, we would strongly recommend you visit one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, the Epidaurus theatre. It takes about 30 minutes to get there by car and if you are lucky, you might be able to join the annual Epidaurus Festival and watch a theatrical or dancing performance which is held in the ancient theatre.
Greece is a country full of sun, history and surprises. All you have to do is explore it!
