In the same building that housed an important old greek beer brewery in the centre of Athens, in Syggrou Avenue now stands the Modern National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST for short). After its renovation, the museum was opened in 2017 so it is considered a relatively new addition to the Athenian art scene but it quickly gained a lot of attention and popularity and now hosts some of the most important Greek and international exhibitions.
The open space gallery is home to artists like Jannis Kounellis, Stephen Antonakos, Mona Hatoun, Kim Sooja and many more and the exhibitions portray the nuance of modern life, with many conveying hidden political messages.
The exhibitions consist of abstract artefacts, photos and audiovisual installations and it hosts regular short exhibitions to support new thriving artists.
Despite being so new in the scene, the EMST has established itself among mega art monsters like the Tate Modern Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York and it promises to stand out with a more solidified role in the future. For the time being it’s definitely one of the best art Galleries in Athens.
